The death toll in Spain due to the covid-19 pandemic today exceeded that of mainland China, with a total of 3,434 fatalities, according to the daily update by the country's health authorities.

According to figures from the Ministry of Health, Spain recorded, in the last 24 hours, 738 deaths with the new coronavirus and an increase of 7,937 in the number of infected.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the country has had a total of 47,610 cases of covid-19, of which 3,434 have died and 5,367 have been discharged and are considered cured (consolidated data at 9:00 pm, one hour less in Lisbon, on Tuesday ).

The Health Commission of China indicated that it registered, until midnight in China (16:00 on Tuesday in Lisbon), 3,281 fatalities.

The number of infected people diagnosed in mainland China, which excludes Macau and Hong Kong, since the beginning of the pandemic, is 81,218.

In Spain, the region most affected by the covid-19 is Madrid, with 14,547 infected and 1,825 dead, followed by Catalonia (9,937 and 516), the Basque Country (3,271 and 155) and Castile-La Mancha (2,780 and 263).

In the whole country, there are 26,960 people hospitalized, of which 3,166 are in intensive care units.

The Spanish parliament will this afternoon approve the proposal made by the Government to extend the current "state of emergency" for another 15 days starting this Saturday, March 28.

The assembly will also ratify the executive's proposals for economic measures against the impact of the coronavirus, such as public guarantees of 100 billion euros, the acceleration of temporary employment regulation or the extension of unemployment payments.

The Congress of Deputies, the lower chamber of the Spanish courts (parliament), will meet with the presence of only about 40 parliamentarians (350 in total), the rest voting by telematics.

The executive's proposals should have no problem with being approved by the vast majority of the parties represented, which includes the main Spanish right-wing parties in the opposition, who have already expressed their side with the Government in the fight against the new coronavirus.

The new coronavirus, responsible for the covid-19 pandemic, has already infected more than 400,000 people worldwide, of whom about 18,000 have died.

After appearing in China in December, the outbreak spread worldwide, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a pandemic situation.

The European continent is the one where the highest number of cases is currently emerging, and Italy is the country in the world with the most fatalities, with 6,820 killed in 69,176 cases, soon followed by Spain.
