The cost of continuous sleepless nights can be serious. This can impair people's decision making skills and cause their moods to plummet. Sleep loss can also affect people's physical health, increasing the risk of serious medical conditions such as obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure. A growing body of evidence suggests that passion flower tea has sleep-inducing properties. It is derived from the passion flower, also known as passiflora incarnata, an exotic vine native to North America.

The herbal supplement has been used to treat insomnia. Studies suggest that the passion flower works by increasing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain.

As the National Sleep Foundation (NSA) explains, GABA is a neurotransmitter that slows activity in the brain.

AN three weeks One study compared the effects of a passion fruit tea with a placebo tea made from parsley leaves.

Participants drank each tea about an hour before bed for a period of one week, taking a weeklong break between the two teas.

Each tea bag was infused for 10 minutes, and the researchers made objective measurements of sleep quality.

At the end of the three-week study, objective measures indicated that participants had not experienced sleep improvements.

However, when participants were asked to subjectively evaluate sleep quality, they rated it about five percent higher after the passion fruit tea week compared to the salsa tea week.

Several animal studies support these findings.

On a clinical trial, the researchers found that P. incarnata (a variety of passionflower flowers) had similar results to anti-anxiety medications in mice.

Two other animal model clinical trials found that sedative effects.

In addition, one 2016 Clinical Trial found that passion fruit decreased anxiety and improved memory in rats.

Other remedies

As the National Sleep Foundation reports, there may be some link between the content of tryptophan and melatonin in milk and improved sleep. Tryptophan is an amino acid found in certain protein-containing foods. It can be converted to melatonin, a hormone that plays a key role in a person's wake cycle.

The NSA added: “But perhaps more powerful is the psychological link between hot milk and bedtime as a child. Just like hot tea, a hot milk drink can provide the perfect setting for a relaxing bedtime routine. "

Experts also recommend taking these supplements to induce sleep.
