The airline Delta announced on Friday (14) an ambitious plan for the next ten years: to reduce carbon emissions to the maximum in all its operations, including aircraft. In all, $ 1 billion will be invested in this to help achieve this goal.
According to the official announcement of the project, the idea is to become the first carbon-neutral airline company – that is, not necessarily cut this practice, but to account for all operations and compensate them with other activities. Altogether, the aviation industry is responsible for 2% of carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. And in the case of Delta, 98% of the total comes from aircraft activity.
The program includes carbon reduction targets by renewing the fleet and improving engine performance to use less fuel – or use sustainable substances instead. Other ideas, on the other hand, demand that sustainable projects not yet possible in practice be put on paper, or bet on technologies that do not directly involve the company segment.
In search of neutrality
The company is committed to investigating ways to remove emissions from the atmosphere and promote techniques such as soil conservation and restoration of areas such as swamps.
The strategy also involves operations on land, such as distributing part of the investment in emissions neutralization projects. The strategy still involves the commitment of investors and employees, but more specific objectives will be revealed throughout this year.
