But some experts believe that adding supplements can also help lower blood pressure.

Three proven supplements to maintain blood pressure lowering properties are aged garlic extract, whey protein and hibiscus.



Human studies found that garlic supplements have a significant impact on lowering blood pressure in people with high blood pressure.

On a study600-1,500 mg of aged garlic extract was as effective as Atenolol in reducing blood pressure over a 24-week period.

Whey Protein

Several studies have linked dairy product consumption with lowering blood pressure, and this has been attributed to a family of bioactive dairy peptides called angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors).

In whey protein, ACE inhibitors are called lactoquinines, and several animals studies demonstrated their beneficial effects on blood pressure.


Several studies have found that hibiscus tea lowers both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

On a study, 65 people with high blood pressure received hibiscus tea or placebo.

After six weeks, those who drank hibiscus tea had a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure compared with placebo.

The 2015 Review In five studies, hibiscus tea decreased systolic and diastolic blood pressure by an average of 7.58 mmHg and 3.53 mmHg, respectively.

What causes high blood pressure?

There is no obvious cause for high blood pressure, but there are some things that can increase a person's risk of developing the disease.

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Eating too much salt
  • Drink a lot of alcohol
