Holiday Guru is always available to answer your questions.
This week he answers questions related to the collapse of travel company Thomas Cook …
Q. I look forward to going to Tenerife on a vacation package next spring, but I have heard that the closure of Thomas Cook will increase holiday package prices at other companies. That's true?
Jan McDonald, Sussex.
Shortly after the collapse of Thomas Cook, flight prices offered by Jet2.com and Ryanair rose significantly.
A. Yes, package prices are likely to rise – it's just a matter of supply and demand. Even shortly after the collapse of Thomas Cook, flight prices offered by Jet2.com and Ryanair increased significantly (as did the company's stock price). In the long run, it seems likely that holiday prices will generally rise.
Q. We booked a Corfu vacation package with Jetline Holidays departing on October 7, but our Thomas Cook Airlines flights have been canceled. Flights are protected by ATOL. Can we get a refund for the entire holiday?
Mrs. Patricia Herbert, via email.
A. You should receive a full refund via ATOL, the Air Travel Organizer License, a fund operated by the government-administered Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
On Monday, CAA will launch a service for all Thomas Cook-related refunds. Payments will be made within two months of receipt of completed application forms (thomascook.caa.co.uk)
Q. I booked an ATOL-covered Thomas Cook vacation for three weeks to travel in January using a credit card. Should I apply to ATOL or my credit card company?
Susan McLoughlin, Liverpool.
On Monday, CAA will launch a service for all Thomas Cook-related refunds.
A. Claim through either, although it may be faster through your credit card. In addition to being covered by ATOL, your credit card company – in accordance with Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Law – also offers coverage.
