But an enterprising airline has devised a nifty way to (potentially) prevent this situation from arising.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has introduced a new feature in its reservation system that indicates which seats on the plane will be occupied by babies up to two years old.

During the seat selection stage of making a reservation with the carrier, all seats occupied by a small child are highlighted with a baby icon.

The Japan Airlines website states: Passengers traveling with children aged 8 days to 2 years who select their seats on the JAL website will have a child icon displayed on their seats on the seat selection screen.

"This lets other passengers know that a child may be sitting there."
