Suurbier, mainstay of Ajax, Dutch teams of 1970s, dies at 75

by Ace Damon

BRUSSELS (AP) – Wim Suurbier, the right back of Ajax and the 1970s Netherlands squad, has died, his former club announced on Monday. He was 75 years old.

A trusted teammate of Johan Cruijff during many of his heroics, Suurbier never came close to having such pure talent. But with his improbable speed running the length of the field, he became an early model of the current right-back. He won three European Cups with Ajax and played two World Cup finals with the national team, losing both.

Ajax said on its website that Suurbier was “the first modern rear in the Netherlands”. No cause of death was given.
