A total of 1807 people died in mainland China due to the new coronavirus (Covid-19), according to the latest balance of authorities, which accounts for 93 new deaths in central Hubei province.
In addition to the 1807 deaths recorded in mainland China, there is also one dead in the Hong Kong region. Outside China, there is one dead in the Philippines, one in Japan, one in France and one in Taiwan.
Health officials in Hubei province, the epicenter of the epidemic, recorded 1807 new cases of infection, a drop from Monday's balance, which was 2048. Across mainland China, Covid-19 infected 72,300 people.
According to Chinese authorities, the spread of the new coronavirus is in the process of being controlled, as the number of infection cases reported outside Hubei is decreasing.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned on Monday about the excess of optimism, considering that the tendency for the decrease in the number of new cases "must be interpreted with great caution".
Covid-19, a virus that causes respiratory infections such as pneumonia, was detected in December in Wuhan, in the province of Hubei, where several cities were quarantined, a measure that covers about 60 million inhabitants.
In Portugal there have already been a dozen suspected cases, but no infections have been confirmed so far.
According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, there are 45 confirmed cases in the European Union and the United Kingdom.
WHO declared the Covid-19 outbreak as an international public health emergency in view of the high risk of spreading the new coronavirus on a global scale.
