PORTALES, N.M. (AP) – The University of Eastern New Mexico has hired a new athletic director.
University Chancellor Jeff Elwell said Matt Billings will begin on January 20. He said Billings was chosen from a strong group of finalists in part because he had experience in various areas at the top universities in Division I.
Most recently, Billings served as deputy director of athletics at Portland State University, where he oversaw offices including sports medicine, academic services, student housing, compliance, budgets, and financial aid.
He played a key role in a $ 50 million renovation of a weight room, new sports medicine and academic areas, and a 3,300-seat arena. He also oversaw football programming, securing games for the state of Portland that generated more than $ 6.6 million in revenue for the program.
A Division II school at the Lone Star Conference in eastern New Mexico has been without a full-time principal since Greg Wagoner resigned in June to take another job.
Prior to Portland, Billings was director of compliance at the University of Southern California for two years. He also worked at Boise State and Weber State.
